Hermanas was commissioned on September 14, 2011 by Anna Benedict as a gift for Emma Benedict.

“Hermanas,” a Spanish word for “sisters,” is the musical representation of both the trials and the beauty of a sibling relationship. Because of Anna’s cultural background, I frequently instilled elements of Latin music into the piece, most especially in the modalities of the soloists’ melodies. Careful emphasis should be placed on breathing and phrasing for the trumpet and saxophone alike. The final section should really showcase the connection between the performers as the melody travels between each.
