PROGRAM NOTES:

The Sacral Trees was commissioned by Micheal Muñoz for his nephews Jayce Abraham and Jordan Thomas in the summer of 2014. The work is a concerto for clarinet and wind band, inspired by the evocative poetry of Sam Reese.

Reese’s Sacral Tree Poems use ancient trees of the Middle East as primary subjects, expressing the mystical, fantastical, and somber characteristics of nature. The trees themselves either functioned as figures of respect or actual deities, taking important roles in the evolution of religion’s stories and their subsequent affect on those who follow them. The work itself attempts to reflect the individual characteristics of these trees and the many stories of various religions whose origins lie in the area, in conjunction with the ancient, mystical, and fantastical sound-world of the Middle East.
